Karla is the founder and director of Enhance Reviews Limited. She has been active in the field of evidence-based health care for over 15 years, and has extensive experience in preparing systematic reviews and critical appraisal of research evidence.

In 1987, Karla obtained her medical degree in Brazil, and then completed a residency in psychiatry. Between 1994 and 1997, she completed her PhD research in a programme supported jointly by the Universities of São Paulo (Brazil) and Oxford (England). During that period Karla worked intensively with The Cochrane Collaboration, was involved with the activities of the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine in Oxford, and participated in a series of courses about methodological design and analysis of randomised trials, organised by the UK Cochrane Centre. After finishing her PhD Karla worked with the Brazilian Cochrane Centre (São Paulo, Brazil) and the Ibero-American Cochrane Centre (Barcelona, Spain), teaching and providing methodological support to systematic reviewers.  Karla has continued to work closely with The Cochrane Collaboration, specifically with the UK Cochrane Centre (Oxford), the Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group and the Cochrane Schizophrenia Group.  Over the years, Karla has accumulated broad, hands-on experience relevant to the preparation of systematic reviews of healthcare interventions, and studies of screening and diagnostic test accuracy. As well as mental health, she has been working with different teams in systematic reviews of interventions in the fields of infectious diseases and pediatrics, systematic reviews of diagnostic test accuracy in cancer screening and pregnancy, and most recently in comparative effectiveness reviews on erectile dysfunction and lipid-modifying agents.
